FACTS YOU CAN USE
In preparing this site, the New Canaan
Flu Committee, compiled
information on twelve select topics that will be relevant to
New Canaan residents. Many of these
topics also pertain to most types of emergency conditions including storms
and man-made disasters; and the recommendations and suggestions
that follow cover
many situations where there might be expected interruptions to power coupled
with the inability or inadvisability to venture out. Most topics are relevant
to many kinds of emergency conditions, while others are more relevant to health-related
problems, not just pandemics.
Of the twelve topics outlined, four—Food, Water, the Medicine
Cabinet,
and the Family Disaster Supply Kit—cover items you should have on reserve
at all times.
Three topics—Individual & Family Planning, Special
Needs, and Pets—cover
topics that are relevant to any emergency situation and take on a further relevance
during pandemic conditions.
Four topics—Hygiene Practices, Home
Health Care for the Flu Patient, Living
at Home for Extended Periods, and Medical Assistance—are particularly
relevant for health related emergency conditions.
And, Who to Contact & Where to Go for Help provides information about New
Canaan town resources to help answer questions.
Keep in mind that as always
for any emergency, call 911; for non-emergency information about topics
in this site,
call the New Canaan Chapter of the Red Cross at 966-1663.
During town-wide
emergency conditions, the New Canaan Emergency Operations
Center will be activated, and
phone lines there will become operational as warranted. Visit www.newcanaan.info often for periodic updates regarding emergency preparedness topics
including material changes in pandemic flu prospects or conditions;
and as warranted,
the town site will be updated frequently.
Our objective has been to make the information in this site
as concise and as consistent as possible, and to make it easy
for you to become
aware and
get information
you need.
We in New Canaan have been working with town officials and
healthcare personnel in surrounding towns as well as with emergency
management
and health care
officials from the State of Connecticut. We believe the Town
of New Canaan has achieved
a high level of preparedness, and we now hope that more of you,
too, will be more aware, get informed, and become better prepared
